REBUILDING STRENGTH: RALPH POUNCEY’S STORY
Ralph Pouncey has spent nearly three decades building a career rooted in the skilled trades. From his
early days working alongside his uncle at just 16 years old to completing HVAC technical training, he
developed a deep expertise that carried him through a range of roles, from hands-on technician to
service manager for a major school district, and later to industrial work supporting large-scale
manufacturing operations. Over the years, Ralph became the kind of professional others depend on,
steady, experienced, and committed to doing the job right.
In May 2024, that trajectory changed in an instant. While clearing a tree from his home following a
tornado, Ralph fell 30 feet from his back deck, sustaining a T3 ASA A complete spinal cord injury. The
accident left him unable to continue working in the physically demanding field that had defined his
career and supported his family. As the primary breadwinner, the impact was immediate and
significant—loss of income, mounting medical costs, and the ongoing challenge of maintaining
stability at home.
During his rehabilitation, Ralph was introduced to The Joseph Groh Foundation through the facility
where he received care. It was there that he also experienced the benefits of a Functional Electrical
Stimulation (FES) bike—equipment designed to stimulate muscle movement and support circulation
for individuals with paralysis. For Ralph, the results were tangible. He noticed improvements in his
breathing and oxygen levels, and more importantly, a renewed sense of possibility.
With those benefits in mind, Ralph applied for grant assistance to secure a MyoCycle FES bike for
use at home, something not available through local therapy providers in his area. His goal is not only
to maintain his health and prevent complications such as blood clots, but to rebuild strength,
confidence, and independence with the hope of eventually returning to work in some capacity.
The support provided through The Joseph Groh Foundation and its donors plays a critical role in that
journey. By helping fund access to this specialized equipment, the Foundation is doing more than
meeting an immediate need. It is investing in Ralph’s long-term recovery and his determination to
reclaim a sense of purpose. His story reflects both the physical demands of a life in the trades and
the resilience required to navigate life after a devastating injury, with the right support helping to
bridge the gap between where he is and where he hopes to be.
BECOME A LUMINARY
Throughout the year, The Joseph Groh Foundation provides life-changing grants that help individuals
connected to the contracting industry with life-altering disabilities access essential resources—such
as accessible vehicles, bathroom modifications, and rehabilitation technology—empowering them to
reclaim independence. By becoming a monthly Luminary, you help propel this mission forward.
