Chuck was introduced to the construction industry at an early age. By about 12 he
began working with his father, a builder in Garden City, Kansas pouring basements
and then continuing from framing to finish out. Chuck's father built his future
wife's parents house and that is where Chuck and René met, getting married not
long after. Chuck continued the business after his father retired, and he and René
eventually moved to Arkansas. There Chuck continued to build houses from
foundation to framing, drywall and cement finish work, painting and staining,
shingling and even electrical and plumbing. When it was time for Chuck and René
to build a house in Elizabeth, Arkansas, of course Chuck built it. Chuck became
involved in church ministries in Arkansas and help build the Christian Life Center.
He also accompanied the pastor on projects to help people in need by building
ramps, handling small remodels etc. On mission trips he was the ideal individual to
have on hand when it came to building needs. He also helped friends with their
building projects.
On September 25, 2014 Chuck fell off a ladder while helping a friend
Chuck fell about 20 feet onto a metal walk board which crushed his spinal cord
between T8 – T12. Chuck was flown to the nearest trauma center in Springfield, Missouri and eventually transferred to a rehab center in Mountain Home,
Arkansas. "Our life has drastically changed since September 25," René recalled. "I
had to take a one-year leave of absence from my job at Walmart to help Chuck. We
have been to a number of rehab facilities trying to get Chuck more mobility."
About eight months after the accident Chuck and René were presented with a 2005
GMC Sierra truck with hand controls. Still however, Chuck was unable to take his
wheelchair with him, which rendered his truck ineffective. René learned about the
foundation through the Christopher Reeve foundation and petitioned us for a
wheelchair lift on the truck.
Thanks to your generosity, the foundation was able to grant Chuck's request!
"I can't tell you how much I really appreciate the Bruno Out Rider Lift!" Chuck
said. "I can now take my electric wheelchair with me wherever I go. God bless
everyone involved with the Joseph Groh foundation."
