Donal’s construction career started out in 1984 when he received his union
operators card as a heavy equipment operator. He first became certified as a
plumber in 1993 while working for Meadwestvaco Envelope as a plant maintenance
mechanic. He then began his electrical apprenticeship, which led towards licensure
in 1996. In 1998 he began his HVAC training, and worked as an MEP technician
for the next 14 years. In 2012 he went to work for the YMCA of greater
Indianapolis where he was in charge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing for all
11 area locations. On February 6, 2014 he was completing final installation of a new
rooftop unit, then went to get some more items to finish the work.
He slipped on the snow however, and fell 7 feet to a lower roof!
The fall damaged to his spinal cord, paralyzing him at C7. He laid on the roof in
24° weather for 7 ½ hours until his wife convinced people that something had
happened! He now found himself a quadriplegic, adjusting to a whole new life. His
income was reduced by 60%, and he had no extra money for items or aids to assist
with daily living. Workman’s Comp installed ramps to his home, widened
doorways and remodeled the bathroom. He sought home
automation/environmental controls so that he could become more independent
around the house. The request was denied as not being medically necessary.
During his rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, he came across the
name of our foundation while looking through some resource information which
they provided. He sent in an application for assistive technology resources.
Thanks to your generosity, the foundation was able to help Donal!
With this technology, Donal can now control dozens of products in the home
independently without the help of a caretaker. Through voice recognition, he now
has full control of televisions, satellite receivers, lighting, ceiling fans, video
intercoms on entry doors, the operation of motorized door openers and HVAC
control settings throughout the home! He can also operate his computer to surf the
web, send and receive emails, develop documents and spreadsheets and make calls
via Skype.
Following receipt of this equipment, Donal sent a note to the foundation which said,
“The new technology works beautifully. It has made my life so much easier, not just
for me but my family and caregivers as well. The first couple of days I opened the
door and went outside to enjoy sitting in the sun. I cannot describe the happiness
this new independence gives me. People don't understand just how big opening a
door, turning on lights or just changing the temperature in your house is because
you are cold. Again Joe, thank you so very much for this gift of not just technology,
but much more important to me – Independence! It may not mean a lot to others,
but to me it is tremendous.”
