Roberto’s Story
Roberto is a lifelong Chicagoan, and lives near 58th and the Stevenson in Summit. He was a union laborer for Lombard Construction for 30 years prior to his retirement. Some of the projects he worked on over the years included the DuPage County Courthouse, Cook County jail, Cook County Hospital, various Chicago public schools, and the remodel of O’Hare airport among others.
Recently, Roberto had a stroke causing paralysis on the left side of his body and speech delay!
His daughter has since moved in to help with his care. When he came home from the hospital and rehab, he was brought into his house in a stretcher. His doctor wanted him to continue outpatient rehab as well as come in for regular visits. There was one problem however – absent leaving in a stretcher, he was trapped in his own home! Roberto needed an outdoor wheelchair lift because his house had many steps in front, leaving him unable to leave and begin his therapies. Roberto’s stroke meant that he was using his life savings for medical bills and interior home remodeling, but that didn’t leave anything for a stair lift. His daughter learned about us while her dad was at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and was desperate for our assistance. All Roberto was looking for was a little help in order to be able to continue living in his home, and You – All of our generous donors – gave that to Roberto.
Following installation, Roberto’s daughter Sonia said, “This has been such a help, we are forever grateful! Thank you for what you do.”
