Steve Keller and his wife
Following high school Steven Keller of Wilmington, North Carolina pursued training in algebra, vocational electronics and business writing. His father was an electrician and control technician for more than 45 years. He first started work in the maintenance department of a plastics manufacturer where he performed electrical and mechanical maintenance. After receiving training on ABB drives, he worked at a water treatment plant and a nuclear power station providing electrical engineering support for vibration analysis testing. Over the years, he continued working and training in the areas of commercial electrical drive systems and controls. In 2009 he joined ABB as a field service engineer. He instructed technical courses at ABB University while providing service repair and commissioning of industrial control systems. He enjoyed completing one job and moving to the next as well as the good living and independence it provided financially. That all changed when he was working on a piece of electrical equipment in 2016.
He was electrocuted with 4160 V while working on a piece of electrical equipment!
Initially, he was grounded so the electricity burned a hole in his elbow. It then came up through his body and entered his kidneys, so when he fell on his knees, he hit his head on the machine he had been working on, allowing electricity to flow through those areas. Steve was brought to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support. After a long recovery period, many more surgeries and testing followed. He received a lump- sum settlement for workmen’s comp which was used for immediate medical bills and living expenses. There were no funds available to retrofit his house to accommodate his disabilities, and he learned about the foundation while searching online. He petitioned us for a bath remodel, which our donors graciously allowed us to provide. See before and after pictures below.
Old tub/shower was difficult for Steve to access
New, walk in shower made his life much easier
